Medical missions is the term used for Christian missionary endeavors that involve the administration of medical treatment. They are often organized by non-profit organizations, churches, or other groups who go on medical missions trips usually staffed by volunteers. These trips typically involve a variety of activities, such as providing basic medical care, distributing medications, leading educational programs on health topics, and preaching the gospel of Christ.
According to Medsend, medical missions began with Peter Parker, an American physician, in 1834. He was the first modern day full-time medical missionary to China. After sharing how missionaries could get into China through healthcare at the University of Edinburgh, a movement was started and in 1841, a group of doctors formed the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society to send medical aid to the world.
Over the years, medical missions have played a significant role in both evangelism and healthcare in underserved communities. By offering medical care, and health education, these missions strive to improve the lives of individuals and communities, empowering them with the resources and support they need for a healthier future. They also provide a holistic approach by meeting their physical and spiritual needs. Offering medical care builds trust within communities making them more receptive to the gospel of Christ and further advancing the Kingdom of God here on earth.
Eden Global Missions is a Christian Non-Profit Organization founded in Cameroon, Africa, and our main aim to reach out to underserved, remote and rural communities to provide free healthcare, education and the gospel. Founded in 2020 by Christian medical doctors, we have as vision to use our medical skills to serve the community, demonstrating the love of God through Christ Jesus.
